Kurt Diemberger

- climber

For 40 years he was among the world's leading mountaineers, and by the age of thirty he had accomplished the majority of his demanding trips. He also fell in love with producing mountaineering films. In 1956 thanks to the first ascent of direttissima on the north face of Königspitze he became a hero among Alpine-style mountaineers. The following year, aged 25, he set out for Karakoram with H. Buhl and two other climbers. With no porters or oxygen, they conquered the virgin Broad Peak at 8,047 m above sea level. Their light-style climbing served as a model for other groups of mountaineers to come. Between 1956 and 1958 he and W. Stefan climbed up the three toughest north faces of the Alps: Eiger, Matterhorn and Grandes Jorasses. Aged 54, he reached the summit of K2, but the whole expedition ended disastrously - a total of 13 climbers perished. Later, he depicted the tragedy in his book which brought him the ITAS Prize for the best mountaineering book. Diemberger significantly influenced the development of high altitude mountaineering by promoting light-style expeditions. In April 2013 he was awarded the PIOLET d'Or for lifetime achievements in Chamonix.
